!!!CANCELLED!!! David Lebovitch-Dahl: Antisemitism, Nationalism and the Austrian Province of the Society of Jesus, 1918-1939, in a Comparative Perspective !!!CANCELLED!!!

Wednesday, 22. January 2014, 15:00 - 16:30

Institut für Historische Theologie, Kirchengeschichte, Universität Wien, Schenkenstraße 8-10, 1010 Wien, Seminarraum 1

VWI goes to the Department of Church History, University of Vienna

The presentation addresses the problem of the attitudes of the Austrian Jesuits to antisemitism and nationalism in the Interwar Period. This question is important because of the significance of Catholicism for Austrian politics and because of the prominent role played by Austrians in the Holocaust.

The study is part of a broader ongoing project on the variations in the positions towards nationalism and racism within the Jesuit Order in Europe. It is the assumption of the research that the Jesuits' postures were influenced both by supra-national doctrinal concerns and by more local pastoral concerns and that the analysis of differences, tensions and debates within the Order regarding nationalism and antisemitism might increase our understanding of factors determining the support of or resistance to antisemitism within Catholic institutions. In addition, by studying the developments in the positions of the Jesuits in the interwar period, the project addresses the question of the continuity of antisemitism in the period from the late nineteenth century to World War II.

The presentation will analyze attitudes to Jews, "the Jewish question" and antisemitism of Jesuits in Italy, Germany, England and Austria, pointing at differences in their positions, and attempting to identify some of the factors that might have determined such differences. To conclude, it will be discussed what might have been specific in the approaches of the Austrian Jesuits, and what a comparative study of the transnational Society of Jesus might add to the existing scholarly literature on the Roman Catholic Church and antisemitism.
