Workshops & Conventions
The research plans and projects by the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI) require continuous discussion and in-depth academic consideration and fine-tuning.
VWI workshops provide a forum for the in-depth discussion of the core research areas named by the International Academic Board in its position paper. The workshops are organized as required and as advised by the Academic Board. However, topics and ideas may also be proposed to the institute from outsiders.
The first workshop took place in close cooperation with the "büro trafo.K" and Dirk Rupnow from the University of Innsbruck's Institute of Contemporary History in November 2011. Entitled "Holocaust Education in Post-Nazi Societies", the workshop focused on the discussion of the challenges posed to traditional Holocaust education in terms of educational measures and content and the issue of dealing with the historical narratives of pupils from a „migration background“.
A further workshop, organized by the VWI alone, was organized with reference to one of the core areas named in the International Academic Board position paper, "Antisemitism at selected European higher education institutions and universities 1918-1939". The workshop was entitled "Alma mater antisemitica" and was held at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in June 2012.
The next workshop is planned for June 2013. It is being organized together with the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Institute for Cultural Science and History of Theatre and the Rothchild Foundation. It will address "The Legacy of the Holocaust in Jewish Archives and Documentation. An International Comparison“.
