VWI Visuals

The VWI Visuals take place intermittently, presenting little known, forgotten, or controversial visual appraisals, commentaries, and documentations of the topic of the Holocaust. The films are first presented by experts and are later discussed by the guests and the public in order to place them into context. With its specific ambience and its cinematic patina, the Admiralkino in Vienna has to date provided the ideal location for this event format. With the new institute building, there is now the possibility of hosting these events in the Research Lounge of the institute.

„Pokłosie“ (Aftermath), 2012, Władysław Pasikowski, OmeU

Thursday, 5. December 2013, 18:30 - 21:00

Admiralkino, 1070 Wien, Burggasse 119

Franciszek Kalina, who left Poland in the eighties for Chicago, returns to his native village after a long absence. There he discovers that his brother Józef has become an outcast, for reasons that only gradually become clear. Józef has been gathering gravestones from an old Jewish cemetery that, since the Jewish population's extinction in World War II, had been used for other purposes. Józef has lined the gravestones up on his lands, and Francziszek is confronted with the outrage of his brother's neighbours. The visit back home turns into a nightmare.

»Pokłosie« – meaning »aftermath« – attracted large audiences to Polish cinemas while triggering fierce debates in the Polish and broader European media. Critics charged the screenplay with enforcing stereotypes and clichés, while at the same time praising the film's powerful performances.

Szewach Weiss of the University of Haifa will introduce the film and make some remarks on the specific context of the making of the film.

Szewach Weiss, born 1935 in today's Boryslav (Ukraine), politician, author and university teacher; having survived the Holocaust, he emigrated to Israel in 1947 where he studied and graduated from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he also holds a degree in Law from the Tel Aviv University. In 1975, he became a professor of Political Sciences at the University of Haifa. Parallel to the scholarly career, Weiss was active in politics. He was a member of the Knesset from 1981 to 1999, during that time he held position of Deputy Speaker and then acting Speaker of the 13th Knesset. He was Israel's Ambassador to Poland from 2001 to 2004. Weiss published several books, including: Yoman parlamentari (1988), Those High-Topped Boots (2012), and People and Places (2013).
