Tim Cole: Distant Reading the Holocaust Archive Against the Grain

The last decade has seen the increasing use of digital humanities methods and tools in new research on the Holocaust. This lecture assesses these approaches and signals the value of a critical approach to digital humanities that distant reads the archive against the grain, unearthing gaps and silences. It also suggests the importance of 'integrated' histories that combine distant and close reading.

Tim Cole is Professor of Social History at the University of Bristol and Academic Advisor to the Dan David Prize. His research focuses on social, cultural, landscape and environmental histories of the Holocaust, its representation and memory.
