Hungarian Holocaust Revisited

Commemorative volumes on the Hungarian Holocaust have appeared at each decade anniversary of the 1944 ghettoisation and deportations. They became reference points in Hungarian research but rarely included work by younger scholars who have taken up the questions and methods of Western Holocaust research. This volume brings that scholarship together. It combines commemoration with newer approaches: gender history, microhistory, memory studies, and trauma studies. For international readers in Holocaust studies, genocide studies, and Hungarian studies, it offers a synthesis of current Holocaust research in Hungary.

Borbála Klacsmann, PhD, is a Hungarian Holocaust historian whose areas of expertise include the microhistory of the Hungarian Holocaust, and the dispossession of and restitution for Holocaust survivors. She has worked for the Holocaust Memorial Center (Budapest), the Anne Frank House, and the Yad Vashem Archives. Between 2022 and 2025, she was a Gerda Henkel fellow at the University College Dublin. Since September 2025, she has been a Saul Kagan postdoctoral fellow at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. She is also the editorial assistant of the journal Eastern European Holocaust Studies and the owner of the Facebook public history blog Holokauszttörténetek.

Dóra Pataricza, PhD, Associate Professor, serves at the Jewish Theological Seminary – University of Jewish Studies in Budapest. A historian specialising in Jewish religious, communal, and intellectual life, Holocaust microhistory, and contemporary antisemitism, she was principal investigator and contributor to multiple internationally funded research projects, including Claims Conference and IHRA. Her publications include peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes on Jewish history, Holocaust research, and antisemitism studies.

Péter Buchmüller is a PhD candidate at the Department of Historical Studies/Jewish Studies Program, Central European University. The subject of his dissertation is the history of Jewish lawyers in Hungary and antisemitism in the profession between 1867 and 1945. From 2024 to 2026, he was a fellow of the Claims Conference’s Saul Kagan Academic Fellowship in Advanced Shoah Studies. He is currently a researcher at the ELTE Centre of Social Sciences.
