Research Interests

The VWI International Academic Board regularly uses its sessions in order to discuss possible future research fields for the institute.

Eventually, a board sub-commission named „European Perspectives of Holocaust Research“ established where the VWI ought to focus its research activities in the coming years. Its members are the board members Gustavo Corni, Susanne Heim, Peter Longerich and Dieter Pohl. From 2012 onwards, these core fields will make up the basis of academic activities at the institute, ensuring that the VWI will evolve into an institution whose import and contribution to the academic discourse make it a Central European centre of competence in Holocaust research.

The position paper „Europeanisation of the Holocaust“ proposes six subject areas that are to be worked on more closely in coming papers as well as project applications:

  • "Anti-Jewish legislation in Europe, 1919/1933 to 1938/41",
  • "The murder of the Jews and the European public sphere",
  • "Indigenous organisations and the Holocaust outside of the Reich",
  • "Administration in the occupied areas, axis regimes and the Holocaust",
  • "Reactions by Jewish organisations and communities",
  • "Reactions by neutral states and international organisations to the persecution of the Jews in Germany"

In 2011/2012, the subcommission joined together with the historians Regina Fritz, Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe and Nicola DʼElia in order to begin its work on the research project „Academic milieu, Jews and antisemitism in selected European universities during the interwar period“. The resulting project application is still being prepared and is to result in the VWI's first large-scale research project spanning a period of several years. The project's first theses and approaches were tested in the June 2012 workshop "Alma mater antisemitica".

Beyond this, the VWI is participating in several smaller, largely Austria-related projects, mostly in cooperation with its supporting organizations.
