It was founded in Linz by Simon Wiesenthal in 1947. The Vienna office was opened in 1961. The association concentrated on the search for Nazi perpetrators and the documentation of Nazi crimes. In addition a department was developed to track anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism. Since 2003, the association has been indexing its holdings with the aid of an electronic database to increase its availability for users.
