Ruth
Wodak, Dr.,
o. Univ.-Prof. Dr., full university professor of Applied Linguistics
at the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Vienna (until
August 2004) and since September 1, 2004, Chair of Discourse Studies,
Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK.
Member of the Commission of Linguistics and Communications since 1983, and
corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class since April 1987
at the Austrian Academy of Sciences; member of various organisations, such
as BAAL, AAA, AILA, ESA, LSA, SLE, IASR, WPV, Leo Baeck Institute etc. Publisher
of two international journals (Journal of Language and Politics, Critical Discourse
Studies), and two book series (Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and
Culture, Diskursforschung). Guest-professor at Stanford University; Georgetown
University, D.C.; Minneapolis University; Uppsala University; University of
East Anglia.
Co-director of the National Focal Point for Austria of the EUMC; chair of the
Panel of Humanities and Social Sciences of the ESF (EURYI awards).
Various scientific awards (such as the 1996 Wittgenstein Price; 2001 the Science
Award of the City of Vienna).
Research focus on anti-Semitism, xenophobia, racism; communication in the institutional
context; discourse-theories; language and politics; gender studies; identity
politics.
